Summerside Sunbank

The Summerside Sunbank created green energy and is allowing the city to be more self-sufficient. Located on the east coast lies the small city with big possibilities known as Summerside, Prince Edward Island. A partnership between the City of Summerside and Samsung SRE, and the financial help of three levels of government the project is now complete. The 69 million dollar solar project put Summerside on the green energy map. Now that the site is up and running, 62 per cent of its renewable energy used by the city comes from local renewable sources. More than 48,000 solar panels have been erected on a 30-hectare property.  The land couldn't be used for development because it's the city's well field, containing three large-production wells to feed the municipal water system. This is the biggest project in the history of the City of Summerside allowing the city to have control of where their energy comes from. Uniquely on P.E.I., Summerside owns its own power utility. The city does still have to buy a significant amount of energy from New Brunswick Power. The power from NB is sent over to the Island through underwater energy cabling. But with Summerside expanding, officials want to be more self-sufficient.
